Hey Friend.
I moved to Puerto Rico to save on taxes… and then I moved right back to California.
This came up at dinner I was at right before I left for my trip. A young guy at the table who is making a lot of money was talking about relocating to save on taxes. (He lives in Massachusetts… so I get it.)
When I mentioned Puerto Rico, his ears perked up. He started firing questions at me.
I told him… it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.
As soon as I got there, a huge opportunity came up back in LA. I’d just moved my whole life to an island… and now I had to hop on a plane and fly all the way back.
And that kept happening. I kept missing opportunities.
We wanted to send our girls to a really good school, and there weren’t many options. The one we chose was far from the house, so I spent a ton of time in traffic.
On top of that, I felt isolated. I was cut off from my friends and my network, and it sapped my energy.
So yes, I saved a bunch on taxes. But being drained has a financial cost too.
And even if I came out ahead on paper… the whole point of money is to enjoy your life. If you’re not enjoying it, what good is the money?
Here’s the bigger lesson…
You can only cut your expenses down to 0. But there’s no ceiling on how much you can make.
That doesn’t mean you hold your nose and pay whatever the IRS wants.
One of the easiest ways to make more money is to free up what you would have paid the IRS and redirect it into hard assets. Pay less in taxes, let your gains push you further ahead… and you get both at the same time.
A lot of my audience is into the whole Nomad Capitalist / Andrew Henderson thing. I am too.
Simon Black was a huge influence on me.
But you can do that without uprooting your whole life.
Just weigh the full cost. The tax bill is one line. Your energy, your network, your opportunities and your family’s day-to-day are all on the ledger too.
This is one of the things we help people with on our free strategy calls. My team will sit down with you and run your numbers to figure out how to lower your taxes without having to relocate.
If you want to see how much you could be keeping from the IRS without moving anywhere, learn more about our calls and book a time here.
Just wanted to pass on my 2 cents.
Hope you have a great weekend. I’m off to Portugal today for a week of surfing with my family, so I’m hoping to have some interesting stuff to share in my next email!
