Something wonderful is happening, in that the World Series, which kicks off Friday, October 23, is going to be played between the Milwaukee Brewers, whose payroll ranks 19th out of 30 Major League Baseball franchises, and either the Tampa Bay Rays, whose payroll ranks 25th, or the Cleveland Guardians, whose payroll ranks dead last. The MLB owners have pushed hard for a salary cap in the current contract negotiations with players, and one of their claims has been that without a salary cap, no small-market team will ever have a shot at winning anything. Unfortunately for this theory, the Brewers swept the Dodgers (whose payroll is more than twice the Brewers', and is the second biggest in baseball) in four straight games in the National League Championship Series. Neither Tampa Bay nor Milwaukee has ever — ever — won the World Series. Cleveland hasn't done it since 1948. And one of those three will be your World Series champion. As of this writing, Cleveland leads Tampa Bay two games to one in the seven-game American League Championship Series, with the next game happening Friday night, and the winner will play the Brewers for the title. Watch it all.
The Netflix series Below stars Josh Hartnett as a Newfoundland dad with a traumatic past who starts to realize that his small town is being menaced by an enormous sea creature. Kinda dramatic, kinda campy, and ultimately quite entertaining, the series will give you all you could ever really ask for, including a "we're not that different, you and me" moment between man and beast. |
