Assistant Secretary Stewart Travels to Morocco

Assistant Secretary for Arms Control, Deterrence, and Stability Mallory Stewart will travel to Rabat, Morocco from October 21-24, 2024.

In Rabat, Assistant Secretary Stewart will participate in and serve as a keynote speaker for the Global Conference on the Role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Advancing the Implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).  This conference will build upon the work of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Scientific Advisory Board, as well as engagement by the OPCW with independent scientific experts, and will inform its newly established temporary working group (TWG) on AI and future work of the policy-making organs of the OPCW.  The conference is sponsored by the Kingdom of Morocco and the OPCW Technical Secretariat.

On the margins of the conference, Assistant Secretary Stewart will also engage in high-level discussions with Moroccan officials to address a range of emerging security threats.  Key objectives will include deepening strategic partnerships, sharing mutual perspectives and expertise on regional approaches to risk reduction, and exploring opportunities to improve and enhance multilateral disarmament and international security mechanisms.

During the conference, Assistant Secretary Stewart will also engage with representatives from OPCW Member Parties on maintaining the international norm against the use of chemical weapons, seeking full and complete CWC implementing legislation, prioritizing information resilience, and endorsing of the Political Declaration on Responsible Military Use of Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy.
