The recent train accident in Tamil Nadu is yet another reminder that the government should focus on railway safety. Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw should invest more resources in ensuring safe travel for railway passengers.

In the financial year 2023-24, Indian Railways carried 673 crore passengers, which is a 5.2% increase from the previous year and the target for the current financial year (2024-25) is set at 830 crore passengers.

These passengers deserve to safely use this mode of transportation and the government should not leave any stone unturned to ensure that.

The Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express collided with a train in Kavarapettai, Tamil Nadu near Chennai on Friday. According to Tamil Nadu police, a fire erupted following the incident and several were injured though no casualties were reported.

Meanwhile, with an eye on Maharashtra elections, the Union government flagged off the ‘Shetkari Samruddhi Samruddhi Special Train' for transportation of perishable goods. It is expected to initially run weekly between Devlali (Nashik) and Danapur (Bihar).
