| Hello. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has addressed the European Parliament to mark 1,000 days since Russia's full-scale invasion of the country. The speech came after Russia reported a strike on a military facility that, it said, was carried out using US-supplied long-range missiles - Maia Davies reports on what we know. We're also featuring stories about China's view of the conflict, a water crisis in north east Syria, and self-driving cars in the US. | |

QUESTIONS ANSWERED | Ukraine marks 1,000 days of war |
|
| | President Zelensky addressed a special session of the European Parliament. Credit: Getty Images | President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on Ukraine's allies to "push Russia harder" towards a "just peace" in a speech marking 1,000 days of war. The speech came as Russia accused the country of using the US-supplied Army Tactical Missile System (Atacms) to hit its territory for the first time, just a day after Washington approved use of the long-range missiles. |
|
| | What did Russia say? | Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Washington of trying to escalate the conflict. "That Atacms was used repeatedly overnight against Bryansk Region is of course a signal that they [the US] want escalation," he said. "And without the Americans, use of these high-tech missiles, as Putin has said many times, is impossible." | What was the damage reported? | Russia's defence ministry said the strike targeted Bryansk, the region bordering Ukraine to the north, on Tuesday morning. According to the ministry, five missiles were shot down and one damaged, with its fragments causing a fire at a military facility, which was quickly extinguished and there were no casualties. | What did the US and Ukraine say? | US officials confirmed use of the Atacms to CBS news, the BBC's US partner. Ukraine has not commented. Ukraine’s military earlier confirmed that it had struck an ammunition warehouse in the Russian region of Bryansk, but it did not specify whether Atacms were used. | | - Updated terms: President Vladimir Putin has approved changes to Russia’s nuclear doctrine first unveiled in September, which set out new conditions under which the country would consider using its arsenal.
- Meanwhile, in the Baltic Sea: German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has said damage to two undersea cables looks like an act of sabotage. The incidents came at a time of heightened tension with Russia.

| China's view on North Korea-Russia | | The Chinese border has some of the only platforms with a clear view into North Korea. Credit: BBC | From Our Own Correspondent: North Korea and Russia's military cooperation in Ukraine is proving a headache for China, an ally of both Pyongyang and Moscow. Laura Bicker reports on this geo-political triangle from the point where the borders of all three countries meet – across which North Korea has been sending its troops to Russia. |

| | We were on a 12-storey platform overlooking the Tumen River which gently cuts through all three territories and winds its way towards the Sea of Japan about nine miles [15 kilometres] away. The three national flags overlap on a map on the wall, and visitors take pictures as a train slowly chugs its way over the bridge between Russia and North Korea – a sign of their flourishing friendship.
It appears as though China’s allies are spiralling out of its control. Beijing, the senior partner in the triad, seeks to be the stable leader of a new world order - one that is not led by the United States. But that’s difficult when one ally has started a war in Europe, and another is accused of aiding the invasion. Analysts have told me there is no doubt China is unhappy with the way things are going – but is trying to keep its discontent relatively quiet. |

THE BIG PICTURE | One million people suffer water scarcity |
|
| | | People living in Hassakeh now rely on deliveries of water transported by tanker. Credit: BBC | Turkish air strikes on energy infrastructure in the Kurdish-held Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) have left more than a million people cut off from access to water and electricity. Turkey said it had targeted the “sources of income and capabilities” of Kurdish separatist groups it regards as terrorists. Namak Khoshnaw, Christopher Giles and Saphora Smith investigate what experts say may be a violation of international law. |
