Good morning, CIOs. Hollywood studios are finding a role for generative AI, from bit parts to top billing, even amid a backlash against AI-generated content and general concerns over its impact on jobs.
The Journal's Jessica Toonkel reports on the latest deal, with studio Promise, the brainchild of two former YouTube executives and a generative AI artist, sealing the backing of veteran media executive Peter Chernin and tech investor Andreessen Horowitz.
AI gets top billing. Unlike traditional studios that are starting to experiment with generative AI for storyboarding or some visual effects, Promise is creating an entire studio centered on using these tools, using the technology for everything from conceptualizing scenes to actual production.

U.K. antitrust officials say they will not open investigation into Google's $2 billion investment in Anthropic. The Competition and Markets Authority launched an inquiry in October to establish whether Google’s plans posed a threat to competition in the country.

Expect more to come. Deals between U.S. tech majors and AI startups have been increasingly under the microscope on both sides of the Atlantic since OpenAI’s release of ChatGPT in late 2022 ushered in a spending bonanza.
