On with the Show
Ahead of tonight’s 75th annual National Book Awards, we’re spotlighting the illustrious history of the esteemed literary prizes with some help from former and current leaders of the National Book Foundation—as well as the treasure trove that is the PW archive. In big association news today, members of the IBPA and PubWest have voted unanimously to combine into a single entity, and MIBA executive director Carry Obry has stepped down. DC Comics has rolled out DC GO, a new collection of vertical-scroll webtoons. And Sourcebooks and Microsoft have each launched new imprints, Hear Your Story and 8080 Books. Speaking of which, Bloomberg reports that Microsoft is the tech company involved in the recent AI deal inked by HarperCollins, and the Washington Post reports on a new study indicating that readers prefer AI poetry to the real thing. Digiday compares the contours of the European and U.S. publishing landscapes. The New York Times looks at how graphic novelist Charles Burns is reinventing the romance comic genre, and rounds up the 25 most influential cookbooks from the last century. And the Washington Post selects the 10 best works of historical fiction published this year.
