Hey folks, health reporter Olivia Willis here, back with your weekly health digest.
First up this week: how do you know if your sunscreen is really a sunscreen?
I've been speaking with experts who are concerned Australians may be relying too heavily on cosmetic "sun protection" products instead of regulated, therapeutic sunscreens — and inadvertently exposing themselves to harmful UV radiation.
Here's how you can tell TGA-regulated sunscreens apart from cosmetic products (and why it's important to wear sunscreen even under SPF50 make-up or skincare.)
In research news, a team of international scientists have identified hundreds of new genetic variants linked to depression, which they say could help to lay the groundwork for new treatments.
And finally, one of the biggest health stories in the country right now is the ongoing pay dispute between the NSW government and psychiatrists in the state's public sector, which could see more than 200 walk away from their jobs next week.
If the planned staff exodus goes ahead, the state's public health system could be left with only 20 per cent of psychiatrist positions filled.
It's a situation health workers fear would lead to "apocalyptic" outcomes for NSW emergency departments.
So, how did it come to this? And what will happen if the mass resignation goes ahead? ABC Sydney reporter Tony Ibrahim explains.
I'll catch you next week.
