Mother Jones Reader,

Meta just made the reckless and dangerous decision to end its fact-checking program, a move that will only accelerate the spread of political disinformation on its platforms. No company in history has done more to amplify lies and conspiracy theories than Meta, and now it’s walking away from even the bare minimum effort to combat the misinformation epidemic it helped create.

From lies about Kamala Harris and other Democratic politicians, to conspiracy theories about COVID-19, climate change and mass shootings, Meta’s platforms have been a breeding ground for disinformation.

These lies aren’t just harmless rumors—they undermine trust in our democracy, fuel political polarization, and put lives at risk. Ending the fact-checking program is clearly a pathetic attempt to appease Donald Trump and win his favor, no matter the cost to our society.

This decision is part of a broader rightward shift at Meta. The company recently appointed a Republican operative to oversee its policy operations, sidelining those who had worked to build a more responsible platform.

Even before this backwards decision to stop fact checking, Meta has allowed climate misinformation to proliferate, reinstated banned accounts belonging to conspiracy theorists, and rolled back content moderation in ways that have emboldened extremists.

Disinformation is one of the greatest threats to democracy, and Meta’s decision to abandon fact-checking is a monumental misstep with profound implications. By stepping away from its responsibility to fight falsehoods, Meta is paving the way for millions more Americans to become detached from reality, threatening the integrity of elections, public health, and social cohesion.

Sign this petition to denounce Meta’s decision and urge the company to put an end to its Trump-friendly lurch to the right.

Thanks for everything you do.
