Chicago Tribune Opinion

Friday, January 17, 2025

Happy Friday, Chicago.

It’s been a busy week.

New polling shows Chicagoans think their rent is too high. Harris Poll CEO Will Johnson shares more on what Chicagoans think about housing, including homeowners’ top concern: property taxes.

Also, politicians are back in Springfield, and Democrats and Republicans alike are promoting something the Tribune Editorial Board supports: recall powers … but only with the appropriate safeguards built in.

Abroad, we’re encouraged to see that Israel and Gaza have reached a cease-fire deal. While the outgoing president and the president-elect are both quick to take credit, what the editorial board cares about most is that this fragile agreement plays out as planned.

Earlier this week, the Evanston City Council unanimously approved changes to its Welcoming City rules that limit collaboration between immigration authorities and the Evanston Police Department. Mayor Daniel Biss writes that the changes also prohibit data sharing with federal officials, a protection he believes necessary ahead of Inauguration Day and a second Trump presidency.

Plus, op-ed writer Peter Schwartz argues that Catholic natural-law traditions are a major influence on right wingers in the federal government.

We’ll have much more coming your way over the long weekend.

— Hilary Gowins, editorial board member
