COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT

NOAA issues final rule implementing Restoration Blueprint for Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary

Today, January 17, NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries releases the final rule for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) Restoration Blueprint.

Over the last 13 years, input from the public, state agencies, and federal partners have informed a robust and thoughtful blueprint that addresses impacts to the ecosystem to ensure it thrives for generations to come. The Restoration Blueprint expands the sanctuary’s boundary from 3,800 square miles to 4,539 square miles and adds 35 new marine zones to facilitate comprehensive and coordinated protection and management throughout FKNMS. It also updates sanctuary-wide regulations to prohibit discharge from cruise ships and enhances the authority to address the impacts of derelict vessels. The changes are now live on the sanctuary’s webpages.

The final rule will take effect following a review by the Governor of Florida, beginning on the date of publication, for 45 days of continuous session of Congress. To learn more, please visit https://floridakeys.noaa.gov/blueprint/.
